Customized fashion advice from your mobile, courtesy of image recognition

Kao Cheki (face check) is a mobile website where users can send in a headshot taken with their phone camera and, based on image recognition technology, receive an immediate response showing their top three celebrity lookalikes. Needless to say the site is immensely popular, which has prompted maker J-Magic to offer a follow-up: Shoubu Co-de Cheki.

“Shoubu” is an excellent Japanese word that literally means “victory or defeat” or “contest” but is also used to describe an item of clothing a woman wears in the hopes of landing a man (for example, “shoubu pantsu” would be a girl’s best pair of underwear). Meanwhile “co-de” is the Japanese way of saying “coordinate,” as in an outfit. So this new site asks users to send in the same headshot, but in return tells you what kind of outfit is most suitable attractive for your face. Simply click on the icon (center of left photo) to automatically generate a text message to attach your photo.

There are over 10 different responses from “feminine” to “natural cool.” Above is “sexy cute,” the verdict for my face (incidentally, Kao Cheki also decided that my closest Japanese celebrity match is Noriko Katou, a pop singer from the early 90s, at 47% compatibility).

Shobu Co-de Cheki, developed in cooperation with Nissen, an online clothing shop, is designed for young women in the midst of choosing their ideal Christmas date look (or still trying to catch that ideal date). The site, free, will be available until December 26th and is accessed through the Kao Cheki site.
